"Freedom for Us. Captivity for Them.": Pan-India Demonstration for Animal Liberation on Independence Day 2026
Multi-city campaign during the Independence Day Weekend challenges human hypocrisy: freedom for ourselves, chains for those whose pain we don’t understand.
This Independence Day, we're turning the celebration of human freedom into an urgent call for animal liberation.
On August 15, 2026, animal advocates and activists across multiple Indian cities will take to the streets with a stark visual message: while we celebrate our freedom from colonial rule, billions of animals remain captive. The campaign, titled "Freedom for Us. Captivity for Them.," will directly challenge the contradiction between our constitutional promises of freedom and our brutal commodification of sentient beings.
The Reality Behind Our Independence
For cows, buffalo, sheep, goats, hens, and fish - this Independence Day is like any other day. These animals endure systematic enslavement, confinement, and suffering in industrial systems they cannot escape or resist. They have no collective, no freedom fighters, no constitution to protect them. They are entirely dependent on human understanding and mercy that never comes.
Today's demonstration asks a critical question: We fought for our freedom. We won. We are free. But who will free them from us?
Who We Are
This campaign is led by the Animal Climate and Health Save Foundation and World Vegan Vision, organizations dedicated to dismantling the systems that turn living beings into commodities.
What We're Asking
We're calling on every Indian to take two concrete actions:
1. Go vegan: End your participation in animal slavery. There has never been a better time or more options to eat compassionately.
2. Watch and share the Amitabh Bachchan reel on Animal Save India's Instagram account: This powerful message has reached 270 crore views globally, and it keeps growing because the truth resonates.
“If being locked inside a cage would make us feel suffocated, frightened and desperate to get out, why do we imagine that animals experience confinement differently?” said Aprajita Ashish, Founder and Director, Animal Save India. “They too experience fear and pain. They too try to avoid suffering. This Independence Day, we are asking people to look at the person inside that cage for a few moments and imagine what confinement feels like from the animal's side.”
For Animal Save India, the central message is not that humans should feel guilty for celebrating their independence. It is that a celebration of freedom can also become an opportunity to examine the freedoms humans have assumed the power to deny, or respect - in the lives of other sentient beings.
Freedom is not truly freedom when it's built on the suffering of others. This Independence Day, as we remember our independence, we must consider and confront the billions of beings still waiting for theirs.
